A mini lesson on taking your own plant cuttings

When we asked the different allotment groups what skills they most wanted to get out of coming to the allotment one of the things people asked for was to learn was how to take cuttings.

We decided to take cuttings from rosemary, gooseberry, house leek and mint plants . Everyone did 10 cuttings each placed in their own pot, now we just need to watch and wait and hopefully in the months to come we will have an abundance of new plants!

Dans Tips for taking your own cuttings

You will need:

Compost

Pots

Secateurs Plants

Hormone rooting powder

Water

These are the steps to follow when taking cuttings.

When taking a cutting, choose a strong side shoot and cut a piece between 5-10cm (2-4in) long, cutting just below a leaf joint. Remove all leaves from the lower half of the cutting and pinch off the growing tip. Dip the bottom end of the cutting in hormone rooting powder.

Place the cuttings in the compost around the side of the pot and water. Then water. Not every cutting will take so its advisable to do plenty.

As you can see by our photo's everyone really enjoyed themselves and are going to buy rooting powder to try it at home!

J Said" I like learning new things, makes me feel useful and so much better "
