Friendship helps beat the lockdown blues

Updated: Mar 18, 2021

We are alive and kicking and continuing to reach out to its members helping them to stay in touch and support each other through the lockdown.

WhatsApp groups like our West End Warriors, local History Buffs and 'Friends in Need' peer support group make sure that there is always someone to talk to, creating new friendships and strengthening existing ones. Conversations, Quizzes games and jokes help to distract people from the negative news and isolation. Telephone calls and postcards remind people that they are not alone and staff and volunteers are always available for support.

Online resources and telephone calls continue to help people with their job search and learning. Four people have had their lives changed since lockdown by gaining employment.

Our weekly Community Lunch Club has grown wheels with staff taking to their cars to deliver a two course, home cooked meal to people who are shielding, can’t get out or are isolated. This week we have expanded the service to deliver a sweet treat baked by Westender Irene who wanted to let everyone know that she was thinking of them.

We are also sending each person a plant of friendship growing kit for their window bottom so they can plant a seed and watch it grow.

Thanks to Bags of help for supporting our Lunch club. See www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp for more details

“These WhatsApp groups have been a life saver for some as well as the postcards and phone calls”

We are so proud of how everyone has come together to support each other at this difficult time.
