Celebrating 5 years of our allotment project

This week marks five years since we first took on our allotments at Sunny Bank Road. From a desolate site with a shed made out of old doors and rubbish everywhere, beautiful things have blossomed.

This was our first volunteers day where we dug out tonnes of earth to make a base for our shed and put in our first beds

Since then we have continued to develop the site, with a polytunnel put up with help from our friends at Yorkshire Building Society, a composting toilet, built by volunteers from the National Citizens Service and an outdoor kitchen and seating area.

We have learnt how to plant seeds, take cuttings, pot on and look after our plants. we have tried new foods, cooked outdoors, held barbecues, outdoor classes and sometimes just sat and enjoyed the fresh air. Its helped us eat well, relax, improved confidence, built friendships and helped many of our volunteers move into work. Its grown into a magical, lush oasis and hopefully you will come and visit when we are able to open up to groups again. Here's to many more years of growth!
